COFFEE, MUSIC, & A SNOW FILLED ASHTRAY

WEDNESDAY – 2.4.9
There are few things better to me than sitting inside drinking coffee and looking out floor to ceiling windows enjoying the art that is snow. When I was a kid, my dad never wanted us to play in the snow in the front yard. I never really understood and probably did it anyway. But, a funny thing happened a few years ago when we bought our house… I found myself doing everything I could to not disturb the peace of our new front yard. Angie thought I was crazy, the neighbor kids probably hate me for it, but I wanted it to stay nice… simple… serene.

This morning I had to get up early to get my car to the shop. It’s out in the middle of nowhere, but they do good work. So, I pulled on my coat and toboggan, put Charlie in his crate and stepped out into the warmth that is 5 degrees. I then realized that today was Wednesday… trash day. And, our trash can was on the side of the house buried under the recent snow. So, going against every grain of every fiber of my being I traipsed through the yard to get to the giant blue can, wheeled it (through the snow, mind you) to the curb, didn’t look at my formerly calm yard and drove off.

As I drove north by northeast through the country the sun began to peak up over the naked tree line. It was one of those moments when I wished I had my camera and a cell phone picture just won’t do it. It hit me… part of why I like the snow is the fresh canvas that appears on the ground with each snow. Then each new flake touches the ground as if a painter lightly touching his fresh new canvas with a new stroke. Snow is artistic. It IS art.

So, back to by warm spot… a Starbucks, no doubt… one of the many I frequent. Cars rush by kicking up sludge and muck. They don’t even know that they add to the art with each murky movement. Part of my normal morning routine before I get off into appointments includes music prep for the coming Sunday. At this moment, the David Crowder* Band’s “Everything Glorious” has just ended (we’re not playing it this Sunday, but it’s a great song). And I see that it’s true. Everything IS made glorious. Even the cold. Even the snow. Especially the little kid with the dinosaur beenie walking in right now.

And, the snow filled ashtray? I just found it humorous.
