A REALLY COOL REMINDER//

Yesterday at Crosspoint we introduced a “new” song to our crowd. I say “new” because it’s a couple of years old and we’ve not added it previously. We’re constantly adding new music to our rotations of worship and from time to time a great song slips through the cracks and we miss it.

The one we added this week was no different. Mighty To Save, as I’m sure many church goers, Hillsong lovers, and worship leaders know, is a great song.  Typically, I breeze past the Hillsong section of worship for 2 main reasons:  1.  It takes like 15 guitarists, 5 keyboardists and 2 drummers with an small on stage worship choir spread across the stage all with handheld mics to pull most of their stuff off.  2.  If you watch a good portion of their videos on youtube, you can see that they have a more intricate stage show for a worship venue than Coldplay did on their last tour.

To pause for a second… If I’m honest part of my distaste for this is my lack of resources to do it.  But mainly, I read somewhere a number of weeks ago that “whatever you draw your people in with, that’s what you’ll connect them to.”  I’m sure I botched that quote, but it’s true.  It’s kind of like the “taste” question.  Is the music a style you like.  Is the teaching/preaching something you connect to.  But ultimately these pieces need to point to something bigger… some ONE bigger.

I don’t question Hillsong’s motives in the slightest.  I just think it can make an expectation of what worship should be like.  I’ve fallen into this trap on countless occasions and probably will again.

All that to say… “Mighty To Save” is a great song!

I have  a friend that just got back from a trip to Hong Kong visiting a pastor/missionary friend of his.  This Sunday was his first week back with us at XPT and we went nuts when we started singing the song.  After service he came up and said something like, “Man, you freaked me out with that new song this morning because I was singing it in China last week!  It’s a really cool reminder that we’re all one family.”

Ture.
