I HATE “REALITY” TV//

Picture 2
From my Facebook last night...

I’ve never been big on “reality TV.” When Survivor came out something like 19 seasons ago, I thought it was interesting for about 3 episodes. Angie loves survivor. She watches it while I’m at rehearsal on Thursday nights. If she can’t watch it, she DVRs it. It’s one of her “guilty pleasures.”

Survivor, The Amazing Race, those types of reality TV aren’t what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about things like The Girls Next Door, Cheaters, Sex Decoy, Bret Michael’s Rock of Love, (don’t forget the spin offs – Rock of Love Tour Bus & Daisy of Love), and the like. REALLY? It’s rubbish.

Then about a year and a half ago while Angie and I were going through some of our testing for infertility I watched a few episodes of TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8.” Still not really interested, but thought, “they were on fertility drugs … I wonder what happened for them?” Some of it was cute.  But, I couldn’t stomach the way Kate treated Jon. The way that he reacted wasn’t much better. I saw one episode where they went to church and remember thinking, “people will now start assuming this is how Chrisitans are.”

Then we jump to last night’s episode. I don’t even need one hand to count the number of episodes I’ve watched in the last year. But, there wasn’t anything else on last night during Isaac’s last feeding of the day, so I watched it.

I was disgusted. I felt awful even watching these people announce their divorce on national TV. This is how their kids are going to remember their parents. I’ve never been the biggest advocate of Kate. But, Jon’s attitude last night was simply childish and selfish. “I have to do what’s best for me … (pause) … and my kids … (long pause) … uh, my kids first.”  It’s just too bad that this is what it’s come to.  And, as they say in Show Biz, “The show must go on.”  And, TLC’s planning on it continuing.  How’s that even going to work?

+++++

Divorce sucks.
People don’t stick it out.
They don’t figure it out.
They give in because it’s hard.

I don’t remember being told that marriage was going to be easy.
I’m extremely disappointed in TLC.
My heart breaks for the kids.

I believe in believing the best in each other.
I believe in redemption.
I live for grace.

It would be nice to see reality TV that showed those.

Stepping down off my soap box…

  1. I HATE…lemme repeat…HATE all, any reality TV. It is simply (and this is an enormously powerful word for me as a special educator) RETARDED. -Complete waste of time, in my humble opinion. All of this press about a ridiculous couple just shocks me. Has anyone heard of IRAN? Sheesh! PJ, I whole-heartedly agree with you. Ya know, it STUNS me that this topic of these people has generated so much action on your blog. I mean, your blog is way action worthy but this is the one they go for? After all, the post about your worship last Sunday…beautiful. The post on your hair was even entertaining…I like the cut by the way. BUT John and Kate! People are moved by that! Ewww…. FYI…I’m not judging if you’re a fan this is just what is true for me. I prefer to READ!

  2. Oooohh…you tricky guy…embedding a twitter feed. I’m gonna go find you now. Have a great day! Kiss Isaac from us!

i totally agree. in my humble opinion, their priorities should be on each other and not the kids or the show. more crap tv corrupting our culture…all in the name of a network selling out to ratings.

Just checking in on the blog since it’s been a while…nothing to say about the show as I’m sure you can figure out my opinion, but I feel the need to comment about the hair cut! I like it SHORT!!! BTW, we can’t make it this weekend and I’m so disappointed…can you guys come and have dinner soon! I need to meet your little man and of course spend some time with you and Angie!
